Web bonanza #4: how your ancestors’ experiences affect you, learn to tap away your fear, and live a loveable life


March is here – one of my favourite months – the winter’s pretty much over, the sun’s warming up everything back to life, and in Bulgaria we have the most colourful and meaningful celebrations.

First of March is the day of Baba Marta (Granny March) – it marks the arrival of spring and we put on red and white woven martenitsi to symbolise health and longevity.  Third of March is our Liberation Day, when Bulgaria was liberated from the Ottoman Rule which lasted around 500 years. Eighth of March is the International Women’s Day which is widely celebrated around the world and is still quite big in Bulgaria with special treatment for mothers (it got slightly converted as unofficial mother’s day during the socialism). And 22nd of March is the Astronomical Spring – the official start of spring time and it’s also the celebration day of my hometown Veliko Tarnovo.

So you see, we in Bulgaria love holidays not only for the days off we get but for the actual tradition and activities involved. There’s also plenty of fireworks included. Boom!

They become a part of us, a molecular residue holding fast to our genetic scaffolding. The DNA remains the same, but psychological and behavioral tendencies are inherited. You might have inherited not just your grandmother’s knobby knees, but also her predisposition toward depression caused by the neglect she suffered as a newborn.

What no one ever told you about how to live a loveable life

What I mean is, our lives revolve around the search for three core human experiences: worthiness, belonging, and purpose. And we seek them for good reason, because when we don’t experience our worthiness we feel ashamed, when we don’t experience belonging we feel lonely, and when we fail to experience a purpose we feel meaningless. The problem is, at some point, most of us begin to seek these experiences of worthiness, belonging, and purpose out of order.

Worthiness, belonging, and purpose can only be truly experienced in that order.
